While Doctor Strange is often synonymous with the title of 'Sorcerer Supreme,' the mantle has been passed around quite a bit. But now, it seems Wanda Maximoff is ready to claim her place among the most powerful beings in the cosmos.
The role of Sorcerer Supreme has been held by many, including Doctor Strange, his mentor the Ancient One, and even Jericho Drumm, also known as Brother Voodoo. In the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU), it's actually Wong who currently holds the title. However, in the 2024 'Blood Hunt' crossover, the villainous Doctor Victor von Doom seized the title. Doom, unlike his rival Reed Richards of the Fantastic Four, is a master of both mystic arts and scientific prowess.
But here's where it gets controversial... This year's major Marvel comic crossover, 'One World Under Doom,' showcases Doom's reign. However, in 'One World Under Doom' #9, slated for release on November 19, 2025, a change is coming. The story teases a shift in power, and Marvel has revealed that Wanda Maximoff, the Scarlet Witch, will step up to become the new Sorcerer Supreme!
Wanda's powers have evolved dramatically over the years. Initially, she was depicted as a mutant with the ability to 'hex' and manipulate probability. This evolved into her wielding 'chaos magic,' which eventually allowed her to reshape reality itself.
In the MCU, Wanda's abilities have grown as well. She started with telekinesis and energy blasts, escalated to reality-warping in 'WandaVision,' and even utilized the powerful Darkhold grimoire in 'Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness.'
And this is the part most people miss... Once considered a weaker member of the Avengers, the Scarlet Witch is now recognized as one of the most formidable heroes, capable of making even Thanos tremble.
So, how will Wanda claim the title from Doom? The details are still unfolding, but a new ongoing series titled 'Sorcerer Supreme,' written by Steve Orlando and drawn by Bernard Chang, is set to explore this.
Orlando has been writing Scarlet Witch since 2023, and the new series is designed as a fresh start. The opening arc will see Wanda in a contest of legitimacy, as the Vishanti, a group of higher beings who bestow the title, refuse to acknowledge her as their champion. Instead, they name Agatha Harkness, Wanda's magic teacher, as their Sorcerer Supreme. Agatha was the villain in 'WandaVision' and the star of the spin-off 'Agatha All Along.'
But Agatha isn't Wanda's only challenge. She'll also face the Goblin Queen, Madelyne Pryor, a clone of the X-Men's Jean Grey, who shares her powers and skills in dark magic. Wanda, once a counterpart to Jean, will now face a foe with the face of her original rival.
'Sorcerer Supreme' #1 is scheduled for release on December 31, 2025.
